Veritasse

A short while back I was browsing the art and design section of our local newsagent when a new title caught my eye. Hiding in between ID and Architectural Digest was something called Veritasse. Even more intriguing was the magazine’s subtitle – “Christian Art and Style.”

Confession time – I laughed out loud at that one.

After composing myself, I decided that this magazine probably merited a more serious review, so I took it home (after paying, of course). OK, Veritasse is light, weighing in at only 51 pages, including inside covers and the articles are very short. The feature piece, on Rob Bell, barely limps onto a fourth, lightly populated page.

However, I find there are some really good things about Veritasse. First, it exists. This might seem obvious, but I really want to applaud any publication that manages to cover Christianity and the Arts. I’ve certainly entertained the idea (and even canvassed for support), but hats off to anyone who makes it happen. Second, the magazine features a lot of artists. It’s nice to see heaps of work and not just pontifications about art. Third, Veritasse has a clear and optimistic tone. It’s probably a case of the pot calling the kettle black for me to say this, but too often Christian commentary on the arts and culture is prone to being negative and hyper-critical.

I’m keen to see where Veritasse goes and will be looking out for future editions. I’d like to subscribe, but frankly, I would demand a lot more content before doing so. I’d be keen to hear from anyone else who has checked out this magazine, or is interested in new publishing projects on Faith and the Arts.
