Well, it looks like Apple will not be updating the ageing Mac Pro line-up before the end of the year. Rumours and speculation is starting to heat up (as suggested by this PC World articlee), but we may well be waiting until at least January.

The odd thing about the PC World article is the suggestion that the Mac Pro release should be timed to maximise Christmas sales opportunities.

“”It’s a no-brainer,” said Dan Hutcheson, CEO of analyst firm VLSI Research. “You’d want it in the stores before Christmas,” he added. Intel has been manufacturing Penryn chips for some time and has built up a large inventory, so it is feasible that Apple will launch high-end Mac Pro desktops too, Hutcheson said.

Dean McCarron, founder and principal of Mercury Research, agreed that Apple should launch workstations in time for holiday shopping.”

Is Santa really putting workstations under Christmas trees?

It makes more sense to talk about businesses perhaps wanting to buy before the end of year. Maybe, people talking the time off to familiarise themselves with a new machine (what I was hoping to do). But, Mac Pros in wrapping paper? Well, I wouldn’t say no…
