Enough is enough. It was not only over a year since I had played a round of golf, it was almost a year since I had hit a golf ball! I was beyond withdrawal and longing madly for the days when the course and practice range was a short(ish) drive away.

So, I decided to enroll in a four-week golf refresher course – the catch is (there’s always a catch in HK) I’m not outdoors. The course in run on an indoor, state of the art Tru-Golf simulator with LS Golf 3 software. Friday was the first session.

My inner-geek is in awe of this machine. You get all the stats on every shot – carry, total distance, spin rate, aerial and side on trajectory views as well as a projection of the ball flight. You can even play on 60 courses from around the world, including St Andrews, Pinehurst, Harbour Town and Royal Melbourne.

My first few swings yielded modest but viable results. After a handful of lowish draws I started to make solid contact – the simulator telling me my 7 irons were flying true and out around 157-160 yards. I’m in no position to second guess that, but it did feel good to striking the ball again; very good!

This simulator is going to be fun and the class environment is something different. But, it’s no substitute for being out amongst the grass, trees and wind, no substitute at all.
