The Ecological Footprint Quiz is a quick and very interesting test that helps you gain some perspective on the impact of your lifestyle on the environment. The metric is simple, converting your food and fuel usage into a land area figure. Of course it makes generalisations, but the resuts are still interesting in a “ballpark” sort of way. The test is developed by the think-tank Redefining Progress for the Earth Day Network.

Apparently my consumption is 3 planet’s worth. Transport was the biggest culprit, using 1.9 hectares. Hard to know what I could change, as I live in remote countryside with no useful public transport system. They also didn’t like the idea that I ate meat EVERY DAY!

I’d be interested to know what could be done to improve efficiency of meat production without cruelty to the animals.

Two good points. Here we are totally car-dependant, while in London I almost never used a car (tube and bus were great for me). Whilst food-production is a kicker and I wonder if some countries are “weighted” on the quiz in terms of impact. A bit part of the impact is also the transport “costs’ involved. For example, all of our meat here (apart from seafood) and most of our fruit and veg is sourced very locally, wheras in the UK, meat migh travel most of the way round Britain before it arrives on your plate (from farm, to abbatoir, to food “factory” to supermaket to your kitchen).
