Well, here it is. Not the announcement I was waiting for, but probably the biggest announcement Apple Computer, sorry Apple Inc. is going to make this year. The change of name for Apple highlights the growing focus on consumer products. Whilst this is good for the share price (up 7.10 on the day yesterday – nice), it does make me worry because my whole reason for being Apple-oriented lies with the professional suite of products (I’ve had some concerns for a while now.

The Apple iPhone superficially looks like a sexy Palm device and having been a Palm user since 1999, I’m not too thrilled about that. Touch-screen sounds good in theory, but it can be very time-consuming and unreliable. I’m hoping Apple will have improved the interface here.

I’m excited about iPhone as a convergence device – the sort of thing Palm and before that, Newton, never quite managed to be. It’s not hard to imagine future intergration with .Mac, iChat and perhaps best of all, Remote Desktop.
