Over the weekend, the iconic Star Ferry service shifted it’s central home from the old 1958 piers at Edinburgh Place to a new purpose built piers on reclaimed land. The move will make way for a four lane road to clear Hong Kong’s chronic downtown traffic, as well more space for shopping and some sort of civic area.
It’s kind of sad really, because the old piers have a wonderful charm about them and the new piers (along with the whole pier development they are part of), really lack any soul. One thing I noticed on the weekend is that all the benches on the top level face away from the views of the harbour and city and towards the new shops in the pier complex – rather telling really.
Anyway, you can find some pictures of the old and new piers on my Hong Kong Everyday set at Flickr.
