It has been fascinating to watch the recent preisdential campaign in Chile, which today has culminated in the election of Michelle Bachelet as the country’s first woman president. In her first address Ms Bachelet is promising a broad and inclusive government, but as with all things in Latin American politics, the true nature of her government will only really evolve over time.
That said, it does draw a fascinating new contour in the political map of the region and one which frankly looks more directly skewed towards the best interests of it’s own people. This is hopeful and populist politics, but also politics grounded in economic and global realism.
