Whilst I applaud any attempt to tackle the massive obesity epidemic we are now facing (obesity is also a huge health problem here in India), getting caught up in the specifics of Jesus’ diet may be missing the point a little. Perhaps a biblical theology of food might call into question the way the industrialisation of food creates a culture of food consumption and food ignorance that damages not just our waists, but our relationship to the world. In particular our fast food culture (and solo food culture) is a more telling difference (more telling than how many legumes we eat) between the pattern of our life and the meal patterns we find in the Bible. Perhaps the correct question is not “what would Jesus eat,” but how would Jesus eat?”
