The Week

My ear is better – not perfect, but better. I’m still on medication and ear drops, but having seen my head balloon the way it did, I’m not keen to take risks. As an aside, I found out on Monday that my ENT treated Gwen Stefani when she was touring Hong Kong. The other news […]

My ear is better – not perfect, but better. I’m still on medication and ear drops, but having seen my head balloon the way it did, I’m not keen to take risks. As an aside, I found out on Monday that my ENT treated Gwen Stefani when she was touring Hong Kong.

The other news is that we’re off on a spontaneously planned holiday tomorrow. Five nights in Copenhagen, which Monocle recently called the most liveable city in the world. Let’s see what all the fuss is about.

I’m glad the ear is better.

Copenhagen is nice-ish as a city, probably quite pleasant to live in but not completely stunning. I think I like Lyon a little better, Stockholm is more picturesque. Hope you have a good time and can relax there – it *seems* to me like you’ve been quite stressed recently. Just a shame that you’ll be so close and yet so far.

Stunning – no, not in an obvious way. But, pretty compelling. I love how easily one can walk around the centre, the quality of the museums (and food), the cycle-centric transport and most of all, the sense that it is a city inhabited by designers and artisans. London doesn’t feel anymore like a place where people make things and in Hong Kong, making and commerce have been divorced by a wall of artifice.

I also – and this is a particular comment on the ex-pat thing – loved seeing families together in Copenhagen. Kids with their parents, rather than helper/nannies (especially Kids with their Fathers!).

As for the year, I’m not sure it is quite stress, but it has been a weirdly unsettled year.
