It has been very interesting to read foreign reporting of the recent Delhi bombings and compare it with local reporting and personal experience. This Guardian report struck me; it is not quite false, but certainly doesn’t ring true either. Some of the foregin links to the explosions that it cites have been downplayed in local papers and are far from the consensus here. Moreover, the market it quotes would most certainly have been closed on Diwali anyway, and is usually closed on a Monday as well. Finally, whilst some grieving at this time would have downplayed their Diwali celebrations, last night the festivities and fireworks were in full swing, like any other Diwali. There is and air of circumspection over Delhi at this time, but not a thorough-going loss of confidence or fun.
