A fascinating read on the way that new music software tools like Garageband and Reason are helping those learing music to express themselves faster and in more interesting ways. This also helps students get a practical handle on music theory faster as well.

Certainly this has been my experience during my berklee course where I have been able to explore ideas in writing for horns and for percussion instruments faster and more effectively than I ever could have ten to twenty years ago. Not that a MIDI software package can yet replace a full Afro-Cuban Orchestra or anything like that. But the software can give a pretty decent snapshot of what a final arrangment could sound like.

It is an amazing time to be a musican and a student of music.
