Literally! Sunday night was the coldest night in Delhi for 70 years. We had what folks in the UK would call a soft frost, but for many people here is was a once in a lifetime experience. It normally does get cool in the winter months here with temperatures dipping under 4 regularly, but usually only for a brief period of time. Yesterday was a sustained cold snap for most of the afternoon and evening and well into this afternoon.
What makes matters worse for people here is that houses are built to dispel, rather than retain heat. For us that means drafty windows, no central heating and marble floors through the house. Despite having a heater on all day I have not managed to raise the temperature in my study above 16 degrees, even in the warmer early afternoon. For the poor it is far worse, with the current cold snap claiming close to 200 lives.
