A couple of Friday’s back, we had the chance to enjoy some of the best local jazz talent in the first ever Hong Kong Big Band festival at City Hall. It was a very mixed affair, with five bands entertaining a very enthusiastic audience. Perhaps the best thing about the night was the chance to enjoy some good local artistry in a comfortable (and smokefree!) environment.
There were a few highlights. The Saturday Night Jazz Orchestra opened up and their singer, Elaine Liu was one of the highlights of the night. Lando Bernal’s Big Broad Band closed out the show with the most inventive set of the evening. Many of the players are very familiar hard working musicians from around Hong Kong and it was great to see what they can do in a larger format.
But, the evening really belonged to Tokyo’s MondayNight Jazz Orchestra. They stole the show with their dynamics, control and general vibe. I could have listened to them for at least two more sets.
Maybe I’m being too optimistic, but it does seem like Jazz is gaining some traction in Hong Kong. There has already been a steady stream of touring performers. But what was needed was to get local Jazz out of hotels, second rate live venues and corporate parties. The Hong Kong Big Band Festival is a great step in the right direction – let’s hope there is more of the same to come.
