What if Church was more like a Spa. Actually, what if we turned church into a spa? It’s an idea I’ve been pondering for a while, not in any definite sense, but more as a creative dream.

If we think about the liminal spaces for a sense of spirituality in the city (what we used to call signals of transcendence), the spa would rank as one of the foremost. Along with the cinema, the art gallery and the sporting venue, the spa is a key place of retreat and enjoyment.

However, the spa is unique in the sense of retreat for re-creation. The spa is an urban oasis, maybe even an urban monastery. I’m not sure I have an answer for what church would look like if it was more spa-like, but it feels like a good question to be asking.
