I suspect that by the time the 100th anniversary of Gallipoli rolls around, ANZAC Day will have more prominance in the national pysche than Australia Day.
Although Australia Day is important, it is really about the founding of what was then a British Colony. By contrast, what we recall on ANZAC Day is a uniquely Australian Spirit, finding it’s own idendity on the world stage. In the absence of a federation day, ANZAC Day becomes the closest thing to a celebration of the birth of Australia as a fully independant country with it’s own ethos and culture.
It is also worth remembering that for those people who over the last 50 years have chosen to live in Australia and become citizens, ANZAC Day represents a more real and tangible representation of the positive values of Australia than they find in Australia Day itself.
