Golf Club Fitting

Spent a pleasant two hours this morning being fitted for some new irons. The process consisted in hitting a selection of different 6-irons (about 15) whilst discussing issues related to swing and feel with two of the pros from my golf course. The process of narrowing down the selection involved issues like swing speed, the mechanics of my swing, contact flight trajectory and general feel. Of course, this all gets weighed together with height, arm length and hand size.

It was interesting that the club I most liked in my hands, the Titleist 704.CB really didn’t work for me. Trajectory and distance was fine, but there was a stiffness to the feel that I did not enjoy. The other major dissapointment was the club I had assumed would be my favourite, the TaylorMade RAC LT. Ball contact felt great with this club and the balance was really nice, but I was alarmed at how inconsistent my shot distance became while trying this one out

I’ve never been a fan of PIng clubs, but both the i3 Blade and the s59 were very solid clubs that felt good and were easy to hit, with my preference going to the latter. I didn’t fall in love with either, but would happily play those clubs if I had to.

In the end my choice was a surprising one, the Cleveland TA7 Tour. I don’t find myself naturally drawn to Cleveland clubs (and I hate their advertising), however, I have enjoyed the clevland wedges I own. These irons felt fantastic to hit and I was able to acheive the greatest consistency in flight path and distance over any of the model I tried. They have a standard model that is meant to be more forgiving and has greater offset, but I did not enjoy that club anywhere near as much as the tour model (and both pros were ademant that the extra offset would be counterproductive for my swing). So the TA7 Tour it is, matched with True Temper Dynamic Gold S300 shafts, fitted a 1/2 inch over standard length.
