One of my regrets, when I left India in 2006, was not having visited Rajasthan. The area is really not all that far from my former hometown of Delhi and the renowned cities, forts and deserts looked so intriguing and full of history. I kept meaning to go and even won a weekend stay in one of the most famous old forts, now converted into an upmarket hotel.
Anyway, I’m in Rajasthan now, exploring the “blue” city of Jodhpur. The blue is actually indigo, which is mixed with a lime based compound and used to paint, or more accurately, wash the homes. Of course, the finish fades in the harsh desert sun and the process, especially when combined with other bold local colours creates some amazing tones and contrasts on every street corner of the old part of town.
One of the highlights of my day was bumping into Gary Tyson of F8Photography, who is here ahead of a workshop he will be leading in the city.
The other was enjoying a home cooked lunch in one of the amazing blue houses of the city, where I managed to take some of my best panoramic images of the fort which towers over the whole area.
Right now I’m really playing with ideas, trying to understand the city and get a feeling for the kind of images that reflect my feelings about this surprising place.
