In a trend that will not surprise either followers on online radio, or podcasting or the BBC, it was anoounced today that the Beeb plans to incorporate its services into a personal radio service.

“Thompson said MyBBCRadio would use peer-to-peer technology to provide “thousands, ultimately millions, of individual radio services created by audiences themselves”.”

At this stage the service will use a proprietary player and may lead to the end of BBC podcasts (oh I hope not). It could be that podcasting is part of the salvation of the radio-medium (and programme format).

It is also interesting that this direction is based on intentional choice, something that is perhaps missed by some analysts. The big difference between flicking radio stations and programming a personal radio player (or iPod) is the choice involved.
