I’ve mentioned before that a day trip to Lamma Island is one of my favourite things about living in Hong Kong. A half hour ferry ride from the Central Ferry Pier and you are on a very hippie-ish Island that feels a long way from the rat-race and hyper-consumerism.
Unfortunately, Friday wasn’t the best of days, with a heavy smog hanging over the island. The local bureau of meteorology likes to call this a haze. I’ll admit that I only studied geography up to first year university, but I don’t recall any mention of brown haze, mist or fog.
Lamma is a quirky mostly car-less island, which means you get great oddities, like this vehicle, which is actually one of the town firetrucks. In fact, everywhere you look there are great opportunities for photos – especially if you want to stretch out with ideas for black and white,
or even HDR (High Dynamic Range).
People often say that Lamma is a great place to connect with nature (or some such sentiment). I’ve always found that something of an odd idea, because a huge coal-fired power station towers over the island. In fact, the power station dwarfs the most popular beach there, creating some rather ironic vistas.
Though, to be fair, it is pleasant beach in its own way – maybe not picture card perfect, but kind of quaint.
