Giving Up Supermarkets For Lent?

Andy Goodliff has linked to a story in today’s Independent newspaper – Giving Up Supermarkets For Lent . Something doesn’t sit right here. Whilst there is a noble idea at play, I’m not sure these kinds of lifestyle changes, however ethical, are quite in the spirit of Lent. Giving up carbs and sugar for Lent might be a sacrifice, but in reality, it is just a diet dressed up in religious garb.

Moreover, having lived in Fulham as the supermarket-sacrificer does, I found the article both hilarious and revealing. Fulham has one of the best farmer’s markets in London, some great local shops (I had several good local grocers, two fishmongers, two Italian delicatessans and Randalls, one of the best butchers in London, all within short walking distance of home) and a regular street market in North End Road. There are few places in London where it would be easier to sacrifice the use of supermarkets.

In fact, the real story is that someone could live there and become so supermarket dependent!
