Toni - must be depressing for Lightbox users. I agree about 500px - they have gone over the top with the gaming/popularity/ranking thing. Detracts from what is otherwise a well designed photography site. Instagram is really only useful for mobiles and there have been big performance issues since the sale to Facebook. The other alternative if Google+, which keeps getting better as a photo service.

I really believe SoundCloud have got it right at the moment. You should check it out once the next version becomes more widely available.

Hi Fernando!
Great review - thx. I'm mac user too and x100. My solution for problem with slow reading SD Card after using it in card reader: lock card before insert to reader. MacOSX (spotlight) create some hidden files on card and X100/X-Pro1 are sluggish.
Second solution - change spotligts settings in macosx.
Regards,

Interesting that you mention the social aspect in comparison with 500px.

You're probably aware of my affection for lightbox.com? Well, as of last night the owners announced they were going to work for Facebook and were closing the site 15th June. Probably the strongest aspect was the social side - out of many thousand photographers, only a few hundred were producing good work - and many have experienced a real sense of loss.

There has been a mass migration to other sites, but none have the social side of things well sorted. 500px (where a number of others including myself will move to) is rather competitive and a bit too 'professional' feeling. Streamzoo, the obvious alternative for all the phone-cam users is like a kind of photographic popularity Olympics, with a 'winner' shown on the front page. Interestingly almost no-one wanted to move to Instagram, possibly out of 'dislike' for Facebook.

So I like the sound (pardon the pun) of SoundCloud's approach. Maybe it's time to explore a little further from Soundclick's rather unfriendly interface.

Fernando, X Pro1s start up basically instantly, upon power on or sleep. However, if you use a Mac (as I do) and insert your memory card to export your photos as opposed to using the USB cable, Macs will write some hidden files to the card which interfere with this and cause the camera to take a few seconds to start up or wake. The fix is to re-format the card upon reinserting it. Problem solved.

It would seem worthwhile being known, followed etc by lots of people if you want to commercialise what you do. In your case I can see why it would be very useful.

A question I'm starting to ask myself is why am I doing some of the things I am right now: actively developing followers on lightbox, adding parts to others (fairly terrible) recordings and trying to improve them. These activities are presently of zero financial interest, but as much as anything I guess I'm doing it for interest, enjoyment and personal development.

Maybe you'll find that Music Matters will collect those types of people too, who aren't so fussed about the commercial side, but still want to see what's happening.

Was there yesterday for the second show! Absolutely enjoyed the whole show laughing all the way from the start when Joey was doing his part and then Russell came in with all his fantastic jokes.

I was a bit disappointed that there was no Chinese or Singaporean jokes too! People should really not be so uptight with his jokes. What a waste indeed. Would have been better but still a great show!

Javier, changing the navigation is just as important, maybe more important, than changing the look. I believe the most important thing is making the site easy to read and easy to get around - that's the main meal. Everything after that is cake.

That said - I like cake.

Kevin, I agree. Many, perhaps most, of my favourite bloggers are people who would have really struggled to get heard in the old media model. That includes some truly amazing artists. It used to be those who can, do. Those who pass the media gatekeepers get to do stuff in the public realm. Now, it's those who do, can. Blogging opens doors!

Hey Bookjunkie - thanks! There must be a crossover, between writing and music, since both skill depend on expressing ideas in phrases and rhythms.

There is a book called Style: Ten Lessons in Clarity and Grace, by Joseph M. Williams, which has really helped me. Williams shows how the structuring, word order, length of sentences and style of punctuation can shape the clarity and impact of our writing. Style is a book I re-read every two to three years. In fact, it's sitting on my "to-read" pile right now.

Hey Ajay & Jex. Thanks. I was shooting this with ISO5000 and the aperture at f1.4 & f1.8. Shooting in A-priority, this was still giving me slow shutter speeds, in the 1/25 to 1/60 range.

Technically, shooting with an IR filter on is much like shooting in near darkness. In my latest trips I've been taking a tripod along, to allow for lower ISO settings and longer exposures.

I was there tonight for the second show and had a great time laughing all the way. It did seem as if he was censored with no Chinese or Singapore-related jokes. A real shame as he did pick on the Aussies, English, Americans, Middle East and of course India and Pakistan.

A real shame he didn't do his great Chinese/English accent and it would be awful to hear that he was advised to steer clear. If one can't laugh at oneself.....

A refresh of our blog´s face is something needed once in a while. Remembering the time I changed into WP coming from Blogger, that was a major change for me and it has been more than 2 years already, definitely an improvement, but there is always room for more.

I have kept the design of the theme I chose back in that time, but I think some changes would be good in coming months. What I have done is try to organize better the categories and tags, before I had too many, and still have, in order to make more clear access to the information contained in the blog.

Good to see the new face in your blog. And thanks for sharing your tips.

I'm right there with you Fernando! Blogging is a way for the average person to join the information super highway, in a way we could never be heard in the mainstream media. I'm blown away by the fact that I make money doing it too.

There aren't many opportunities like blogging for everyday folks, and I'd encourage anyone to give it a try, stay with a while and see where it leads. You really never know. Guest blogging on established sites is how I got my start, and I'd never written anything that had ever been published before! Now they pay me to do it.

But apart from money, I really enjoy the feeling of making a difference. When your writing stirs people to make comments in response, you know you're getting somewhere.

I expect to be blogging for the rest of my life. And that's another factor--every phase of life creates new subject matter...I guess you can say that blogging is as dynamic as life itself.

What a beautiful post about blogs. I too appreciate the direct connection with the audience. And being your own editor. No middleman as such and it's your voice out there.

I love the way you write. Wish I could write half as well. There's a rhythm to your style. Must be because you're a musician :-)
